Abstract
Chordoma is a very rare tumor which is considered to originate from the ectopic remnant of the primitive notochord.
This tumor is considered to locate chiefly in the sacrococcygeal and spheno-occipital area, and 10% of all cases in other vertebral areas.
A case of chordoma in the 5th lumbar vertebra .is reported here.
A 23-year-old man had complained of low back pain :and radiating pain to the right leg since 2 months before.
After confirming the chordoma by open biopsy in the 5th lumbar vertebra, radiotherapy with Co-50 was performed and some symptomatic relief was achieved.
Symptoms recurred in 3 months and the patient expired with severe cachexia in 5 months, .but no evidence of distant metastasis was found.
